This is a story of generous Mr Schneider who had a basket of apples to give out for free. He wrote a note and left it on top of the basket. However, the wind blew the note away, and the sequence of events that happened thereafter turned out to be both hilarious and unbelievable. Simple yet wonderful, this story teaches us to be kind and generous, in a fun and engaging manner. Interactive elements include role-playing and a hands-on activity at the end of the story.

Admission is free but registration is required. Register at https://www.nlb.gov.sg/golibr…/e/interactive-cl-storytelling now!

Fathers' Day is round the corner, and what better way to celebrate the occasion than with some fun picture books! Spending time reading books together is a great way to usher in Fathers' Day, making the time together even more special for both daddy and little one(s)!

P/S: Click on the images to purchase the books online!

Fathers' Day Book #1 - 《桐桐和爸爸:学会感受亲情的温暖》

Picture
Little Panda Tong Tong hopes his dad can do everything for him. He also wishes that his dad can spend more time with him. The Tong Tong Tong series of picture books use stories and colorful illustrations to teach children about traditional Chinese values. The lively illustrations and lift-the-flap featurs definitely appeals to young children aged between 3 and 6.

Fathers' Day Book #2 - 《我爸爸》

Picture

In an endearing homage to dads everywhere, a boy describes and exaggerates the many accomplishments and feats of his father. Among the traits praised are his enormous talent for singing, his near-professional wrestling skills, his extreme bravery in the face of danger (he's not even afraid of the Big Bad Wolf!), and his ability to eat like a horse. All of the pictures feature the lovable pater in his signature plaid bathrobe, adding a further comfy layer to a book whose ultimate message is "I love my dad. And you know what? HE LOVES ME! (And he always will.)".

Fathers' Day Book #3 - 《爸爸,我要月亮》

Picture
In this unique and delightful picture book, the story literally unfolds as pages open dramatically, extending both outward and upward. Monica wants the moon to play with, so her Papa sets out to get it for her. It isn't easy to climb all the way up to the moon, but he finally succeeds -- only to find that the moon is too big to carry home! Fret not, Papa surprises all of us with his ingenuity, and the story gets a joyful ending!

Fathers' Day Book #4 - 《爸爸的图画书》

Picture
How do the fathers of the various animal species look like? How do fathers and children interact in the animal kingdom? In this fun-filled and vibrantly coloured picture book, your little one will learn all about the fathers in the animal kingdom, and draw parallels between what he/she reads in the book, and his/her interactions with daddy at home!

4 Children's Books about the Dumpling Festival

6/6/2018

Picture
One of the major festivals in Chinese culture, the Dumpling Festival, also known as the Dragon Boat Festival, celebrates the famous poet Qu Yuan who is said to have leapt into a river when an evil king captured his kingdom. Fishermen tried to save him by beating on drums and splashing their oars to keep the water dragons away. When they realized that it was too late, they scattered rice dumplings into the river so that his soul would never be hungry.

Picture books are excellent in getting your little one ready and excited for festivals! Here are our top picks!

P/S: Click on the images to purchase the books online!

Dumpling Festival Book #1 - 《端午节》

Picture
This book comes from a series of picture books that introduces traditional Chinese festivals to young readers. Comes with hanyu pinyin, so daddy and mummy don't have to worry when reading it with your little one! This paperback copy is around A5-sized, hence making it extremely convenient to bring around.

Dumpling Festival Book #2 - 《粽米飘香艾蒲长:端午节》

Picture
This book is similar to the first one recommended (see above), but suits older children (aged 7 and above) better. It explains the origin of the Dumpling Festival, introduces customs related to the festival and promotes the appreciation of Chinese culture.

Dumpling Festival Book #3 - 《端午节之屈原的故事》

Picture
This a pre-intermediate (900 words) Chinese reader about the Duanwu Festival, telling the story of Qu Yuan, a story related to the origin of the festival. Plus points include a word list that is provided at the end of the story, post-reading exercises and a passage for extended reading, as well as a CD-ROM that narrates the story, the passage for extended reading and the word list in the book! Super worth the $$$!

Dumpling Festival Book #4 - 《端午节之屈原的故事》

Picture
This book describes in detail the life of Qu Yuan, the key person behind the reason why we celebrate the Dumpling Festival. If your child loves reading on Chinese history, then this book (as well as the other books in this series, which introduces historical figures like Qin Shi Huang and Wu Zetian) will definitely excite him/her!
Want to spend some quality family time over the weekend just before the Dumpling Festival? Join us in our Interactive Storytelling cum Craft Session on 17 June at Maha Yu Yi (Bras Basah Complex L3)! All participants will receive our Dumpling Festival Story Pack (worth $49.90) and a $10 book voucher.

Sunflower Holiday Camp

3/6/2018

The kids from our June Sunflower holiday camp are all ready for the upcoming Dumpling Festival!

Using our very own 《伊伊,端午节快乐》Dumpling Festival Story Pack, we learnt all about the traditional Chinese festival, from the story of Qu Yuan, to the different flavours of rice dumplings (fondly known as bak chang), and not forgetting our very own dragon boat race! We even had a post-lunch trip to Singapore's largest children's Chinese book store, Maha Yu Yi!

Not forgetting our special guest, Ms Ding Li, more fondly known as 丁丁老师! Author of our featured story book 《伊伊,端午节快乐》, she shared the wonderful story with our camp participants, followed by hands-on craft and language activities!
